Should girls and boys be told different stories?

For the last year I have been dipping my toe in the great sea of Audio Books. I have had a number of collections uploaded and they’ve done relatively well. I’m about to really dive right in with a whole host of collections, which I’ve been recording over the last couple of months. A different kettle of fish It is, and let me be very clear on this, a different art. Audio Storytelling needs to be handled differently. I write my stories down when I record them, which I never do when telling. This is important because there is no room for error. You do not have your body to convey information so you must be precise in what you’re saying. I’ve found as well that there’s a lyricism that can come from writing, some very talented people can probably do this improvised – but I’m not one of them. Also, do not underestimate the

January 12th, 2011 zero comments Blog DetailsSo Lee and I decided to take up the offer of Vijay the camel man (www.camelman.com) to go on a three day trip into the villages of Shekhawati. And it was probably one of the best decisions we made. Partly because of the wonder of mooching about villages that rarely (if ever) get to see tourists. Partly because we got lots of rum, a camp fire and we shared stories late into the night. But mostly because after Vijay heard me tell a story he decided to invite the local Bhopas over the next night to play. Bhopas are the caste of storytelling musician/ singer poets that are particular to Rajasthan and the Bhopas of Vijay’s village are world renowned, having just returned from New Zealand before coming to us. Unfortunately my camera couldn’t pick them up because it was too dark, but I recorded some of the singing and took some piccies: What was really great was when he began to improvise verses, you could see the light in his eyes when he made jokes relating to the people present. And after a few rums he was very much enjoying himself! It was a great experience and exactly what I

How about if the only thing you had to read was a book about math, or English grammar? How often do you think you’d read? Well that is what it’s like in Laos. A country where the only book a child will ever see is in school. They copy out the text and then take it home to learn. As you can imagine many would rather not bother. Speaking to Laos people about the joy of reading was once met with disbelief and laughter. But now there is Big Brother Mouse, set up in 2003 they publish books. As storytellers we are always about keeping the oral tradition alive and I have and do uphold the mantle for telling over reading any day… but in this situation, where stories are lost because no one writes them down, where children have no future because they are illiterate – to find a company that is actively keeping the stories alive through creating a publishing culture for a country that has little to no leisure literature is a moving moment. They are a Laos company, but set up by an American who put all
